Tai Chi and Benefits at Athens Regional’s Mind Body Institute

By Mattee Barkdoll, MSW

Tai Chi has been growing in popularity in the United States over the past several

decades. Perhaps the word Tai Chi brings to mind images of folks in China all moving in

a graceful rhythm in the early morning. Or maybe you really do not know much about

Tai Chi. In either case, you can read on to learn more about the benefits of this

wonderful practice.

Part of the Chinese system of health and healing, Tai Chi is an art of immense depth,

and is part of a larger group of practices called Qigong. Breathing and movement work

together, allowing the mind to rest while energizing the body. There are many styles and

forms, all with something to offer, and it is important to find a qualified instructor who

teaches a form and style you enjoy.

Many scientific studies support the practice of Tai Chi as a path for improving health,

developing a greater sense of well-being and increasing clarity of mind. Your body,

mind and spirit work together to enhance health or, for those facing disease or illness, to

improve your healing. Reported benefits include:

• Pain control

• Ease of movement

• Relaxation and sleep

• Ability to cope with stress and depression

• Balance and coordination

• Concentration and memory

• Muscle strength and stamina

• Circulation, heart and lung function

Ready to try it out? The Mind Body Institute is offering a wonderful opportunity, thanks

to an anonymous sponsor. In May Valerie Fagan, LCSW will lead Tai Chi Easy, a

practice that can be adapted for people of varying abilities. In June Julie Buffalo, RN,

will teach Tai Chi Chih, a longer series of movements suited for a healthier population.
